Our Post is very busy with activities for our members. Karaoke, bands, meals, attending sporting events, Halloween party, New Years party, Superbowl Party, Casino Nights, etc. Please check the calendar and Post FaceBook site (VFW Post 6859) for all the latest!

Americanism

Our Post hosts, conducts, and participates in many public commemorations and other events on many patriotic days, honoring America's veterans and rich history. Our Post conducts a Patriot Day (9/11) service. Our Post and Maine Rolling Thunder work together to conduct a POW/MIA Service in September. Our Post often provides Color Guards for such things as sporting events and military reunions. Our Post also marches with our Color Guard in Portland's Memorial Day Parade and Veterans Day Parade. Patriot's Pen

Each year more than 132,000 students in grades 6-8 enter the VFW’s Patriot’s Pen youth essay contest. The national first-place winner wins $5,000 and an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C. The first-place winner from each state competes for national awards totaling $54,500, with each first-place state winner receiving a minimum of $500 at the national level. The essay contest encourages young minds to examine America’s history, along with their own experiences in modern American society, by drafting a 300- to 400-word essay, expressing their views based on a patriotic theme chosen by the VFW Commander-in-Chief.

Teacher of the Year

Without our nation’s veterans, America wouldn't be the great nation it is today. Our youth deserve to learn about our rich history, traditions and the role of our veterans in creating and shaping America. The VFW Teacher of the Year award contest recognizes three exceptional teachers for their outstanding commitment to teaching Americanism and patriotism to their students. Each year, a classroom elementary, junior high and high school teacher whose curriculum focuses on citizenship education topics — for at least half of the school day in a classroom environment — can be nominated for the Smart/Maher VFW National Citizenship Education Teacher Award.

Blood Drive

Our Post runs a blood drive every year to help the American Red Cross. Please check the newsletter, calendar, and Post FaceBook site (VFW Post 6859) for updates.

Buddy Poppies

The red poppy has connected generations of veterans, service members and their families with civilians in remembering all those who have fallen. And for more than 75 years, the VFW's "Buddy"® Poppy program has honored those who have sacrificed by raising millions of dollars to support veterans' well-being.

Community Service

Reaching out into our communities is vital to our organization, developing relationships with community leaders, media, school faculty, and local civic groups. Our Post sponsors Bayside Little League, donates our banquet room for community meetings, and periodically has participated in school activities (flag etiquette, speaking with students).

Memorial

Our post frequently is called upon to conduct the VFW Ritual for our deceased members. We have also assisted local families by conducting funeral services for veterans in our community. Our Post makes our banquet facility available free of charge to members organizing services associated with funerals for family.

Coming home doesn't mean the battle is over. With over 10 times the amount of veterans lost to suicide than to combat operations in the same time period, there has never been a more important time to TAKE A STAND and DO something to support our veterans!! If you or someone you know is suffering from PTSD, we have people that have shared a similar experience and are ready to help.

Voice of Democracy

Established in 1947, our Voice of Democracy audio-essay program provides high school students with the unique opportunity to express themselves in regards to a democratic and patriotic-themed recorded essay. Each year, nearly 40,000 9-12 grade students from across the country enter to win their share of $2.1 million in educational scholarships and incentives awarded through the program. The national first-place winner receives a $30,000 scholarship paid directly to the recipient’s American university, college or vocational/technical school. A complete list of other national scholarships range from $1,000-$16,000, and the first-place winner from each VFW Department (state) wins a minimum scholarship of $1,000 and an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C.
